Unlocking New Revenue
How Builtvisible Turned UX Into a Competitive Advantage
Builtvisible Knew UX, But Struggled to Win the Work
Builtvisible is one of the UK’s best-known SEO and organic digital agencies, working with some of the world’s biggest brands to strengthen their digital presence.
As they grew, they recognised the impact of UX and product design in shaping digital experiences but despite offering these services, they struggled to communicate their value to clients.
Clients were going elsewhere for UX and product design support, not because Builtvisible lacked the expertise, but because they weren’t positioned to showcase it effectively. They needed a clearer way to articulate the benefits, integrate UX into their proposals, and win work in this space.

Building Confidence and Capability
Building Confidence and Capability
I worked with Builtvisible to strengthen their team’s understanding of UX and product strategy, running two separate, one-week in-person training courses at their Old Street offices. The sessions covered the full product lifecycle and tackled common challenges in digital product development.
By focusing on practical activities, we helped the team see how their approach could transform client products. This wasn’t just about learning new skills, it was about reinforcing their existing strengths, sharpening their design thinking, and giving them the confidence to lead in areas they were already capable of delivering.
A key part of the training focused on commercial impact. The team learned how to communicate the business value of UX, showing clients that even small investments in product design could deliver significant returns.

Following the training, Builtvisible asked me to consult on a client pitch for a well-known social enterprise. Together, we mapped out a realistic and valuable UX programme, ensuring the team could confidently present their capabilities.

Navigating a Third-Party Development Team
The client had already engaged an external development agency, a common scenario for non-engineering agencies. Rather than taking a “throw deliverables over the wall” approach, we focused on building relationships and fostering collaboration. This shift helped align all teams and positioned Builtvisible as a strategic partner rather than just a specialist agency.

Balancing the Logistics of User Research
The team needed a research plan that worked for their travel schedules, the client’s budget, and SEO considerations. We explored in-person, remote, and hybrid research approaches to find a solution that met all these needs without compromising on insight quality.

Product design is not linear.
It's cyclical and iterative.
At every stage, the product development can move back a step and change to make the final outcome better.

The Outcome
The Outcome
By refining their approach to client engagement, technical collaboration, and research logistics, Builtvisible secured a major project with their client. More importantly, they strengthened their ability to win and deliver high-value UX and product work in future engagements.
The expertise was already there. The key was learning how to position it, communicate its value, and integrate it seamlessly into their offering. With the right approach, Builtvisible didn’t just expand their services—they grew their business.

I have to be
legally good.
Proudly not working with companies in, Tobacco, Oil, Mining & Gambling and many others.
As a pending b-corp, I've legally agreed not to work with companies that make life on this planet worse for us.
There are lots of folks out there who’ll happily work with them, but I like to actually make the world a better place.

"To get the obvious out of the way; Jon is in many ways a quintessential digital product designer and is always a passionate advocate for the end user. But what he brings that is uniquely Jon is enthusiasm; not just for the role (of which there is plenty), but also for the environment and the relationships that surround the role. It isn't enough to be good at the job, but he must also try and ensure the people he's working with are, and the environment they're working in is, comfortable and creative."
Bob Ferry
Design Systems Lead - Quinyx
"I really enjoyed working with Jon, I've learnt a lot from him, and would truly recommend him as a skilful product designer and a great team player. He always puts a great effort into clarifying both the user and business needs and objectives, and makes sure to get alignment across the project team. "
